Zydeco Music is a world-wide sensation. Fans love Zydeco because it is a strong root music that just makes you want to dance. The more you dance, the more you need to drink, which leads to more dancing.
The term Zydeco comes from a slang pronunciation of the French term of snap bean (or green beans). The French name is ‘les haricots’ and sounds like la-zah-ri-coe if you say if fast. Where did it come from. It depends on who you ask. :)
One story says comes from the creole sharecropper culture where women would call a session to snap beans while the men played music. Anther claims the grownups would put the kids down to sleep and head to the woods to play and dance (the counterpart to the Cajun cultural fais do do. Yet another harkens to the phrase the way it was used to describe poor people or when times got tough, you could not afford to salt your snap beans, thus the phrase, the snap beans ain’t salty’ was born and became Zydeco.
No matter how you say it, you can’t go wrong with listening and dancing to Zydeco Music. Spawned in the bayous and dance halls of Louisiana, it is both an adaptation and pure form. Zydeco is the root dance music of the south Louisiana black culture. Old School Zydeco is instantly recognizable and some people prefer that sound because it blends in more of the older creole roots of the culture. The more modern Zydeco (known as Nuveau Zudeco) reaches past the simplicity of the root form and adds more complex bass lines and other embellishments that give it a new sound.
